2009 Christmas Shoebox charities

  • Was thinking about this the other day!

I was going to say Age Concern for elderly people. But I'm sure Salvation Army were collecting near me last year, or even a local Church might have a scheme.

Will definately do a few this year. I just need to find some shoes boxes...maybe I could buy myself lots of shoes??? Hmm maybe not, but not a bad excuse :p

I'm going to make some flannel reindeers for some, I think they're great fun!! I know my gym does a lot for our local women's refuge (Hemel Area) so I think i'll do mine for them. I'm guessing they'll accept them, not seen anything advertised yet.

Anyone got any ideas of things you could put in a box for the elderly? Was thinking maybe some chocolates, nice bath salts/bubble bath, but then I get kind of stuck. Would probably put it in a nice hamper too, as obviously it wouldn't need to be restricted to a shoebox for transportation.

Nice mug / cup with maybe a snowman soup sachet or tea or coffee sachets with some homemade cookies / biscuits

Crossword box (you can get smaller ones to fit)

    Pen and writing set

    Pack of playing cards ??

For a ladies box maybe scented drawer liners

    For a man Hankerchiefs

Also i would try to do a box with sugar free food as a lot of older people have diabetes, etc....

I was thinking that about chocolates and things, if people can't have them. Oh, maybe could include a fleecy blanket or some slippers or a nice scarf or something? My own grandparents are really awkward to buy for so I'm assuming the same thing about all old people where this obviously isn't going to be true! I'll keep an eye out for things while I'm out and about :)

Id say for the elderly things like:

    Nice soaps and bath products
Homemade food items tend to go down very well, cards, cakes, sweets etc
Homemade cards, photo frames, notebooks etc
    Crossword/word search books
    Small cuddly toys
    Socks
    Hankichiefs
    Playing cards/travel board games
    Hand knitted scarf, socks etc
Food hamper type items (although this idea better suited to those living in their own homes rather than care homes)
    Dried flowers
    Trinket boxes

I'm sure i will think of more, for anyone thinking of doing one for a care home, i'd speak to the staff there for ideas also, as it may differ depending upon the residents they have, and they can also advise on the amount of diabetics etc.
  • Smile is the only charity i can find that dont request donations so I will be making as many boxes as I can get hold of for them :D

I dont mind making a voluntary donation but dont want to feel as though I can afford to make up less boxes because I'm having to send £2/£2.50 with each box!

Apparently takes a week. Lovely shoebox filler!
