Energy company failed to charge for Gas

Last year I changed energy suppliers after reading this site. I filled out all the necessary forms and everything seemed fine and nothing more was said or done.

Its been 12 months and I thought that I would do the same this weekend as I have come across a supplier 18% cheaper than my current dual supplier.

I have just gone through my contract and bank statements and have seen one DD per month. Apparently that is for electric only and nothing has been taken for Gas. I was under the impression the DD was for both.

Can the energy company now demand payment in full despite everything filled in correctly and completed on my side but they failed to collect a DD for gas? I guess it will come to about £500.

  • Yes they can. I had similar happen to me when I moved into a rented property the original tenants didn't tell EDF that they had moved out.

I moved in and told powergen to take over the gas and electric, they failed to take over the gas but didn't tell me.

2 years and 2 house moves later EDF sent me a bill for about £300...it was a fair cop :o

Yes, of course they can claim it. You have used it so you have to pay it.

I dont think you will be able to change suppliers if you are in debt to your current one, for the gas anway.

How much was the DD that you saw. If you thought it was for gas and electricity why do you say 'apparently its just for electric. What happened to make you realise that it was just for electricit.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

    £103 pcm

As I found a cheaper supplier so I checked the contract for any exit charges and discovered the error. Literally, 2 hours ago.

Well thats fine. If it has to be paid then it has to be paid!

I just wanted to be clear that I completed and sent all the paperwork and for whatever reason they did not collect a second DD.

They're not supposed to "seek payment for unbilled energy where a supplier has failed to bill for 12 months and is at fault for this failure." (OFGEM website)

If they've billed you but have just failed to collect the DD, I don't know. If it was me I would start by writing to them and pointing out that they're not supposed to seek payment etc., and see what they say. If the rule applies in the case of an uncollected DD, they may well just cancel the outstanding amount. If they say the rule doesn't apply, you can point out that by not collecting the DD they've faced you with a large unexpected bill through no fault of your own. They may at least agree a reduction. But if you decide to try for a write-off or a reduction, don't change supplier until after it's sorted out.

;)Sorry, dont mean to be rude but thats one hell of a lot of money for electric per month. Are you 100% sure its just for electric. My monthly gas and electric is only about £90 together. There are 3 grown up here.
Sorry also to presume (you might have 10 kids for all i know)
Just trying to put your mind at ease. I hope its for both :D

  • Hello Crisp

I noticed that you opened an ING account on one of the threads.

I sent you a code, but as I never received £25, I guess you never used my code. I have sent you loads of PM's but no reply ever received, that's why I have sent these public messages hoping it may shame you into a reply.

Could you please reply to me, as this could cost me £25. Did you use another code from someone else? If so, just let me know.

The OP has not been online for nearly two weeks.

This is not the place for you to be chasing referrals, and 'shaming' people into replying to you is not in the spirit of MSE.

Which supplier is it? Most tend to setup individual DDs for electric and gas, rather than a single one for both, although £103 per month does sound like a lot for electricity alone.

If you don't think they've taken money for the gas via DD have they actually billed you, either online or by post?
