CCleaner is your friend. Unlike some programs, it has never caused me any issues.

i am similar in that i dont have a clue whether to check alot of the things on it. however the following i do check and are pretty sure it is ok to.
    temporary internet files.
    cookies.
    history.
    recently typed urls.
    last download location.
    autocomplete form history.
    temporary files.

the above are all in the windows menu. i dont check any in the applications menu. the only reason i dont check anything else is i am not sure whether to or not.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I may need to run it because the system seems to have slowed down this past week and I think I read somewhere that if this happens then have a clear out.

system slow down could be down to a number of things.
bring up the task manager and look at how many processes your running, if its anything higher than 40 processes your probably running to much stuff, my system xp pro sp3 is usually around 27-30 processes to give you an idea, but currently 33processes running.
I would install Malwarebytes antispyware (freeware) and update, then run it, just to make sure you haven't got any, and reboot if required.
in CCLEANER, tools/ startup. just change from enable to disable
these are all extra programs that are running, none of these are windows programs, not required by windows, example if you have a wireless mouse 1 may be the drivers for it, if you have a bluetooth dongle, 1 or 2 may be that, as it has the name of the program in the list, you could type out the list and we could tell you which to disable.
Windows by default has a load of processes running which arent required at the best of times. When i shutdown all my programs, before playing a game, i can usually get the system down to 24 processes.
  • Set a restore point - then CC shouldn't cause any probs - it never has for me anyway and the amount of cr*p it removes is worth running it for.
The atmosphere is currently filled with hypocrisy so thick that it could be sliced, wrapped, and sold in supermarkets for a decent price and labeled, 'Wholegrain Left-Wing, Middle-Class, Politically-Correct Organic Hypocrisy'.

I run it just as it installed itself (I dont know what the techy stuff is either)

One thing to be carefull of though..

It wipes all your log ins and passwords so make sure you can remember them before you run it, or you wont be able to log back in here and complain at me..:D

If you untick clear cookies in any of the web browsers that you use i.e. Explorer, Firefox, Opera etc. Only tick clear cookiesin the web browsers that you never use (I never use Explorer as its too slow). You can always tidy up cookies manually ( under tools, options, privacy) in the package you use regularly by deleting the cookies to the sites you don't use, leaving, for example, MSE's cookie. CCleaner has always been my friend.
