will my friends gas be cut off

he has been struggling financially and has around 5-600 to pay the gas board in past bills and is worrying they will cut the gas off.. he plans to start working on paying it back shortly. so just wondered whether they will get to the point of cutting off service or is this something they dont do?

No they wont be cut off, although they will have to have a pre-paid meter installed. When they insert the card in the relevant meter, the meter will deduct a small amount to start paying off any debt, leaving the remaining credit to light or heat their home.

When any pre-paid credit runs out, I believe an emergency credit kicks in, once that runs out the lights will go off. Any pre-paid card inserted after that will have to repay the emergency credit, plus still pay of a small amount of the existing debt.

I had to request they installed a prepayment meter they British Gas didnt offer
just sent disconnection notice. A friend in the same position didnt request this
and they did cut off the Gas.

Phone and explain that you cannot pay and request a prepayment meter asap

yes there is a risk if they do not sort something out with their supplier
