laptop just won't connect to router. wired or wireless.
Run combofix, avira, malwarebytes,
(all three found one or two problems)
took all the rubbish out with hijack this
reset winsock with "netsh winsock reset"
run norton removal tool,
run mcafee removal tool.
disabled & enabled tcpip4 & tcpip6
The thing which may be the elephant in the room is that Vista is saying it's a pirate copy.
I want to re-enter the worn COA, but i need the internet to confirm it!
Oddly, ipconfig is picking up the router gateway (192.168.1.1) and dishing out a DHCP IP address (192.168.1.4 in this instance).
But I'm not able to ping the router.

try going to control panel - system - device manager and uninstalling your network card, reboot and let the lappy discover and reinstall said network card...works a high %age of the time....then, if still no joy, do you have a usb wireless adapter you could try with it ??......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Depends on the router, ours worked fine with mulitple XP machines, problems only started happening when we introduced a Vista laptop to the family, the router needed a software update to run with Vista, you need to check the specs of your router to make sure that it will work with Vista, some of the older ones won't.0

Try the command nslookup https://www.google.com
This way we might get an idea if DNS traffic is getting past the router and whether the DNS settings are correct.
Try pinging some websites. Don't know if the activation problem could be related - might be - if so, I'd guess that MS must lock internet access to any site except their activation site...0 -

HP laptops have a F11 system restore.
Even brought back my Vista code!
RJ45 still not working so it's bucked.
Wireless Vista takes huffs with my 3com router.
So everything sorted. Cheers folks.0
