Landlord and BT and third party: lengthy!

We'll be there for 18 months so we can get the free installation offer if worst comes to worst. Though as he's lied to us I think I'd rather pay BT to do it, simply as a matter of principle. You may think it's cutting off my nose to spite my face, however I don't believe that by lying to your tenants you should get money for that.
All BT wanted to know was whether there was an active line at the property, they found out there was, we told them that we were moving there and they were quite happy to do it for us. If LL wants to pay for a 12-month contract and installation then that's his problem. We didn't ask him to do it, he did it before the property even came onto the rental market.
I've posted on the landlines section of the forum too, however wanted to see what any current LLs had to say about this whole fiasco. I actually spoke to my dad about it, who is also a LL, and even before I told him that this activation had been done back in August he said that he had no right to make us pay for it.**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

The principle will cost you £25, plus get your landlords back up. If you think its worth it then fine. (and better than struggling on dongles). All BT wanted to know was whether there was an active line at the property, they found out there was, we told them that we were moving there and they were quite happy to do it for us.
Hmm, as I said before, they are only acting on half the information. If you said " there is an active line, but its just been leased to a reseller" their answer may well have been different. Ask the wrong question, you get the wrong answer.
As I also said, my knowledge isn't totally upto date.
Best of luck in sorting it and with your new home.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. As I said, when we called BT, we were under the impression that the LL was leaving the decision up to us, we did not know at that point that he had already activated the line off his own back in August. So we couldn't tell them that!
The only reason we found out that it was the LL who had activated the line was because after we had spoken to BT, we then spoke to the LL, who seemed pleased that we would not have to pay anything, who then sent us an email forwarded from this company saying that it we did not have to pay that fee because they had already activated the line.
We then called M-Line Telecoms who stated that the LL had arranged to have the line activated back in August. Why would he then bother asking us on 13th September what we wanted to do if he had already activated the line and set up a contract through M-Line Telecoms?**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

i think OP needs to really calm down and look at this from a different perspective
Landlord is on hoiday - so you do not have his side of the story - you have BT and Mmlines views (and in my view BT should be known as Bloody Terrible- they are such an appallingly bad company)
You need to take a deep breath and calm down, stop getting hooked on the "small stuff" and decide to have a calm conversation with your landlord when he returns from holiday.
He MAY have thought he was helping you by having a line that would cost you less than the standard BT connection charge
he may be on commission and may earn money from you on an Mline line
there may be a massive miscommunication going on
yoiu just dont know till you talk to him
Everyones views here are most interesting, but, specuative - as we only have one side of the tale
As others have said - you need to take the longer term view here and decide if a few quid now in your back pocket, may irretrievably damage your relationship with your new landlord
At least give him the opportunity to tell you his views before deciding his is out to shaft you0 -
Hum... it was written into MY contract that we cannot change suppliers! Huh! When I pay the bills I get who I like without the LL interferring.
The LL might be an interferring sod, on the take or totally stupid. If the connection is in his name, he can pay for it!I run an event management company, I put on events, I go to events, if I don't know anything about events - its not worth knowing!:j:j:jNegotiate, Negotiate, and Negotiate again.:j:j:j0 -
I am calm!!!! *she says foaming at the mouth*
I totally get what you're saying, however why on earth did he say that it was up to us what we wanted to do for us to then find out that he'd already got the line connected in August before the flat was on the market?**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

Haven't got the foggiest love, just don't foam on him. Know your rights, kick up a fuss and tell him to shove his phoneline where the sun don't shine (get a free connection via BT at the moment)I run an event management company, I put on events, I go to events, if I don't know anything about events - its not worth knowing!:j:j:jNegotiate, Negotiate, and Negotiate again.:j:j:j0

"foaming " at people rarely gets them what they want - you have to develope a good relationship with this person over the next 6 months - try to stay calm and at least listen to his side first0
