If you can be bothered, have the time and want to save a shed load of money, move all the small stuff yourself in your car, doing multiple journeys and then get a man with a van for the big and heavy stuff that won't fit in the car. My house move cost me about £50 inc van and fuel for my car. I only moved about 15 miles away though. Admittedly half my stuff went to the tip during the move though :)
  • We have a piano and we've always found it's cheaper overall to get it moved by a specialist piano moving company. OH is very possessive about his piano (it's a fairly decent one) and they are so much more careful, and really know what they're doing. I think for our last move, it cost just over £100. You'll find too that they'll pad the piano properly and they they know how to get it in and out of doors without taking the corners off ... Also, when ordinary removal blokes see a piano they tend to get very, very ratty, and it's hassle you just don't need on moving day ...

Why? Hoults told us it is the same price whatever day we move.

    Depends on their workload.
Last time I moved it was considerably cheaper to move on the Wednesday compared with the Friday.
