Intermittant Jeep Immobiliser problem

Hi all,

I own a 1998 Jeep Cherokee that has developed an intermittent immobiliser problem that has left me stranded several times. Basically the car is fine for a few days and then totally fails to start (security LED stays on, engine runs for 2-3 seonds then fails). A few hours later it's ok again. Grrr!!!

A Jeep dealer has confirmed that there is a fault somewhere in the immobiliser system but they cannot seem to fix it. They are also unwilling/unable to disable the immobiliser (claiming because it's Thatcham approved).

My current plan is to try and find a local auto-electrician (I live in Wokingham near Reading) that would be willing / able to disable it.

Does that sound like something that would be possible or is there a better course of action I could take?

Cheers

Lardington

  • my new vw wont start if its a hot day and the windows have been left closed

I think its something to do with the plastic in the dash expanding and putting pressure on the transponder aerial. If its going to be hot i have to leave the windows wide open (they do randomly open by themselves sometimes but that's a different matter) to prevent the heat building up.

Also try the spare key incase its the key part that is damaged

an auto sparky will be able to bypass it but remember to tell you insruance
  • Thanks.
Funny you should mention the heat becuase it did seem to happen more frequently when the weather was warmer.

    Auto electrician it is then.

That or a lit rag in the petrol tank ... just kidding.

  • try the spare key first
  • Ok, will check though I'm pretty sure it's failed on both sets. I'll check though.

    Cheers
