Some good advice above - shop arround, look for a group 1 vehicle, pay-as-you-drive, try pass plus (though to be honest i don't think it is worth is as very few insurers actualy recognise it these days - BUT it is a good course). Smarts are a good idea, and yes, the TP liability is less due to only 1 possible passenger.
I just had a 1.2 fiesta for about a month as a courtesy car - it was nippy and handled well so worth a look! I also drove my mates 1.4 fiesta around the block as a quick comparison and while the difference is noticable, i don't think you would miss the bit of extra grunt 90% of the time. Uses less fuel too.
Where abouts do you live - postcode might be driving it up? Can you park off the road? Unfortunalty 21 year old male working in retail is a fairly disasterous profile to have - nothing personal it is just the actuarial and underwriting view - sadly it is an undisputable truth that young men crash more and crash worse than any one else.0 -
You got cheaper quotes a few months ago as you had a provisional licence and no doubt Quinn were quoting a really low premium which they do for provisional licence holders0

Some councils use speeding fines to make pass plus cheaper or even free. It is worth doing.
Talk with your insurance company and get it in writing that they will give you a discount when you pass because you will probably do the pass plus in your car after you bought the insurance.
Direct line gave my son his 20% on a cheque but only after a fight.0 -
If you do end up with a smaller car I have heard good reports about this scheme.

Its underwritten by Zenith who are not a very good Insurer which is probably why its cheap0 -
The problem with Pass Plus is that even if i get a 20% discount from Direct Line, the cost is still more than one of the cheaper insurers without pass plus.
I guess the obvious answer is to get in contact with the cheaper insurers and see if they lower the premiums for Pass Plus.0 -
My 18 year old son passed his test in Jan this year, he has been insured to drive my 10 year old 1.4 Fiesta Zetec fully comp at a cost of about £900 for the year. The main reason it is that low is because the car and the insurance is in my name with him as a named driver (insured with Direct Line) so he is buildling up his own no claims.
we have just traded the car in on the scrappage scheme and I am now driving a Sept 2009 Hyundai i10, he is still insured on it fully comp and we atually got a rebate of £60.
Is there any possibility you could buy a car in someone else's name (who has already built up no claims bonus) and add yourself as an additional driver for a year or two??
Although I must say that I am the main driver for my veh and my son can only use it when I don't need it for work. So not sure if this would work if you where going to be the main user.Elite 5:2 #6 8 /34lbs0 -
My 21 year old son passed his test today and we have been looking to get him a car with cheapish insurance. Even then the insurance is crippling. I was wondering whether to get myself a little car with him on the insurance. I'm sure I would use it more than him.I had a car a couple of years ago and had some NCD. How long would that be valid for? I have just been a named driver on my husbands car since then.
I do feel sorry for the young ones with the cost of vehicles. Obviously they are paying for the idiots who don't care. the only trouble is, it encourages them to have cars on the road illegally.Keep on trucking!0 -
and I also believe - totally my own thoughts this - that the very prohibitive cost of insurance for young drivers is what 'encourages' them to drive uninsured which has a knock on effect and bumps up premiums even further...Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily Dickinson

Would you be happy for your own Insurance premiums to increase to subsidise the premiums of the young drivers?0
