Cheap Washable Kitchen Paint?

Options
Hi guys,
I'm looking to repaint my kitchen walls, just got the go-ahead from my landlords, and I'd like to use a washable paint (so I don't have to do it again!). I also don't want to pay a huge amount of money. And I don't really know anything about paint, so there's a few things I'd like to ask;
1) What is it called? Is it vinyl paint? Or waterproof paint?
2) Where can I get it for cheap, and while I'm here what is a cheap price for paint?
3) I want to paint it yellow, as I think that's a nice kitchen-y colour, but I'm not sure it'll go. My kitchen surfaces are fake black granite, the floors black stone tiles (rough, not polished) and the cupboards themselves are white. The previous colour is magnolia. Anyone got any suggestions?
4) How can I stop the paint from getting all over the white cupboards?

If anyone can answer these I'd be eternally grateful!

To answer to your no 4 question, if you stick masking tape on the edge of the cupboards it won't matter if you get paint on the masking paint as you peel it off afterwards.
You'd be better with paint meant for kitchens, but it will say this on the tin. Keep an eye out on offers - for example B&Q and Homebase, as they have offers on quite frequently. Homebase have an offer on this weekend

Oh and worth getting tester pots for the colours you like, as very often the colour shown in the brochure can vary quite a lot in real life
  • use either dulux or Crown kitchen paint
these usually give the best cover and will
work out cheaper in the long run than
    buying own brands.Usually £17.99 for 2.5 litres
But look out for offers on it,although the regular
    emulsion will work well enough

Cover up with newspapers and old sheets
I went to my local charity shop and asked them
if they had anything large enough to use as
a dust sheet that was not good enough
for them to sell in the shop they happily gave
me a large stained blanket that someone had
donated for free,I have done this a couple of times
    chuck away after

Have a packet of baby wipes to hand, only 50p in Asda
own brand if you get any little spills use them to wipe off

Do you cook with gas ? Might be why it was painted
magnolia,to hide any discolouration from cooking

  • Thanks guys, that's brilliant. There's a homebase just down the road from me so I'll go check it out!
@sce79 - I always have trouble getting masking tape off things, but luckily I found a pot of sticky-stuff remover so that should cover it. Am also going to get some white spirit/turps to remove spills etc.
@rosekitten - No, but I'm pretty sure it's a cost issue. My landlords were running out of money when they did the decorating, so all the walls in my flat are magnolia... and all the floors bar bathroom and kitchen are carpeted in brown :(
It'd be nice to have a different colour, even if it's just in the kitchen!

  • we used Hombase own brand kitchen paint in our kitchen nearly 2 years ago and its still good!!

  • B&Q do their own kitchen paint which is great, i would recommend you buy a 5ltr even if you dont think you need that much .
It is cheaper than two 2.5ltr tins and then you have plenty to recoat next year or whenever .
These paints are all water based so you do not need turps/white spirit to remove spills, just water.
I would advise you wipe the walls down with sugar soap(only cheap) to remove any grease .
I use a small 6inch roller in kitchens that way it is much more controlable than a larger one.
You need to buy low tack masking tape ,that way it is easily removed.
Make sure you sand down and woodwork, otherwise the paint will just scratch off.
    happy decorating

  • Cheers, jon, that's good to know!
I'm not doing any of the woodwork, it's too much trouble. Plus if I started sanding it I'd have to do it properly, and that'd take ages - it's rough as a bear's bum!
Definitely give the sugar soap a whirl, but I'm planning on using brushes instead - it's only a small kitchen, and there's a lot of cupboards.
