I'm thinking of buying this for my 12 year old son for Christmas http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-N130-Netbook-Processor-Battery/dp/B002MQOI3K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1253869443&sr=8-1 He has just started secondary school.
We have a very slow PC in the house and my laptop which I use a lot. Was thinking of buying the above for him, my max budget is about £250. I would like a good battery life, this one is around 6 hours. I know you can get better battery but those obviously come at a higher price. So, is this a good buy for what I want, is it a good buy in general?

Can't help you directly, but here are some netbook reviews in general. The Samsung N130 is reviewed here, and there's a US one here..
And a "battery life of up to 6 hours" could well mean as little as 4 hours - there seems to be some disagreement/difference between the batteries supplied and available in different countries.0 -
I have a Samsung Netbook (NC10) and am very happy with it. Only problem with any netbook is that there is no built in CD/DVD tray so is that going to be suitable for your intended uses ? Also to keep the cost down you tend to get very little in the way of preloaded software eg not even MS Works. Also I have seen an Acer Aspire One netbook heavily discounted in Tesco Extra recently (around £229) - seemed like a good price.0

I think that a netbook would be the wrong option for your son. Netbooks are really designed to light and portable so you can carry them around away from home, connect to mobile broadband and do some basic tasks. Or do kids take laptops to school these days?0

No, at his school they have 1 computer for every 2.5 children. At the moment he just uses it for surfing and playing online games so not really sure what to get.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0
