Vista and black screen problem - only mouse pointer shows

Hoping someone can help here.
Last night my son had his pc on and no problems, nothing had been installed recently. His fiancee wanted to switch to her user but it wouldn't so he restarted the pc. That's where everything went wrong!
Vista would not load - it tried but was getting a BSOD. We tried using the Vista CD and chose repair. When it got to the screen for choosing the OS to repair it didn't find any.
We tried going to the next screen anyway and chose startup repair. After a while the pc restarted and seemed to start loading Vista. It got to the login screen and my son chose his accouint - it then got to the black screen with only a mouse pointer showing.
Having googled the problem we tried a few things. Task manager was available to us. We could load Internet Explorer, msconfig, command prompt but could not start explorer.exe to get a desktop.
Whilst this black screen was there we could access my son's pc from my pc and could see and access his shared folder.
We then tried safe mode and this loads up fine. We then looked to see if anything had been installed recently but nothing since the 10th September. Then had a look at System Restore to restore to an earlier point - however there were no system restore points available at all which was rather strange.
Can anybody help please?
