Buy Gold, they say....

In a few threads here and there on MSE, people have said 'Buy Gold' as an investment; now, assuming they don't mean "walk into your high-street jeweller and buy some plain gold bands", where would one go if one wanted to buy what I'd term 'serious' gold?
You know, something like an ingot that would take two strong men to lift into my safe deposit box at the bank (or, I should say, my projected safe deposit box)?

OK, shoulda put a smiley at that bit.
I'm serious about the rest though, maybe not about the quantity. Wondering if it's a good way to invest some of an inheritance....0 -

googler - When I had some gold, I held it in the form of an ETF - PHAU. There are some good threads on here about ETFs if you do a search. One good one buy the poster with a smoking baby (that's their avatar, they don't actually have a baby who smokes. Can't remember their name though
