if i go into macdonalds and order seperate drink fries and burger they advise you to have it in a "meal" which is cheaper.
so are the phone companies supposed to tell you your phone package deal is not the most economical ?
i've recently found out that my call charges have been around £40/mth more than they would have been if they had advised of a better package for my use.
?
my provider is virgin which i would have benefitted around £40/mth if i'd have taken the anytime calls deal @ £7.99
currently i only have free weekend

Of course they are not, no supplier [except perhaps financial] is obliged to advise on "best buy". You are expected to do your own research, which is why a lot of phone & energy companies have such confusing tariffs, so you cannot compare like with like IMO
The fact in a burger bar they may say get it in a bundle is perhaps good PR, or do you expect say Tesco to tell you at checkout that buying two 100g jars of coffee is cheaper than buying a 200g jar? When an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0
