meter check..? how
Options
Hi Peeps,
I think my meter (electricity) is not running right I know we all think that when he bills come, but I have been monitoring the meter for a while now and it seems to vary so wildly at times I,m pretty convinced there,s something amiss.
I have a Leccy monitor a hourly type but not total over time...
The thing is, reading the meter daily we sometimes use 20units using nothing high.then the next day using the washer 4 times use 11 units...
How can I check this meter.... I heard you could run a second meter to check but at a cost...
that would be fine if it put my mind at rest...
We went from an electric cooker to gas recently (gas cooking went to 50 p per week) ebico supplies by the way...
The electric went down a little about 8 units but now back to where it was somedays
cheers for any help...

You can have someone from your electricity supplier come out to test it, but if it is working fine (which it nearly always is) you will have to pay for the call-out (something like £50).
You need to properly understand the way you use your electricity. You talk about the washing machine, but really the washing machine isn't something that uses much electricity, especially if only run at 30 or 40 degrees. It is things like the kettle, shower (if electric) and iron that use the most electricity - things that get hot. Keep an eye on this sort of thing and see if it makes more sense.0 -
Firms will run a 'back to back' test to check the accuracy of your meter.
They will charge if the meter is found to be OK and I believe the cost is a little more than £50 these days.
You can also buy one of the Owl type monitors that although not as accurate as the fitted meter will give you a good indication if there is a problem.
For consumption to jump 12kWh in a day, it must be something providing a lot of heat(assuming your meter is not faulty)
Could you have an immersion heater switched on?0 -
If your supplier gets it checked they will first charge for an engineer to do a test. If he believes it is faulty he will fit a check meter to run alongside for a period of days. Dependant on your supplier and where you are these tests can be approx £70 upwards.
I would suggest getting yourself a monitor such as a Realtime or an Owl. This way you can monitor how much is used over 1 day, 7 days and a month and compare to your meter. It's much cheaper as the suppliers charge will only be refunded if your meter is faulty.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0
