It's just the way times have changed. Many families have never had a child go to university so they are curious too.
A lot of students do look round on their own. Some universities like the parents to look round once their son/daughter has been accepted on the course as it was in my sons case.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

You should see some of the modern accommodation: en-suite facilities, TVs in the rooms, telephones etc. When I were a lad we were grateful to have a cardboard box and a shower to share. Students these days don't know how fortunate they are etc. etc.

There'd be a fair bit of commuting if you don't live on campus.
First, it's not 3 miles outside Coventry, it's 3 miles from the centre of Coventry. How many cities only have a radius of 3 miles? It's definitely in Coventry, the address would show you that (and the CV4 postcode!)
Second, there are lots of trees and fields around the campus, but not surrounding all of it. One of the routes out of campus has minimal trees and fields. You are correct that it's not a city campus though of course.
Finally, how much is a "fair bit of commuting"? I live less than a mile from the centre of Coventry, 3.4 miles driving distance from campus. If traffic is good then it's less than 5 minutes by car - on average takes me 15. If you made an attempt to live on the bus route then it's only about a 20 minute bus ride, 30 in rush hour. Is that too much?
Although to be fair, most students seem to decide to live far away in Leamington. Baffles me

Most people would think these to be improvements which going on visits with parents doesn't seem to be.0 -

Ok I'm not an expert I was just giving my impressions.
A car journey or half an hour on the bus is certainly a fair commute to me. I didn't say a LONG commute but if it's not walking distance then the cost adds up one way or another. Just something to take into consideration, not necessarily right or wrong!Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20 -

I've found that although I took DS1 to all his open days, DS2 and DS3 required less assistance. And I liked the fact that Warwick split parents up from applicants (at least they did on a Computer Science Open Day) and showed them round separately. It was my favourite visit, and fortunately DS1 liked it best too. But at the other places I left him to it and hit the shops ...Oldernotwiser wrote: »What happened to the days when students went for interviews/open days on their own? DS2 went to interview at Cambridge, all by himself with an overnight stay. He went with a friend to Warwick. And he declined to visit Durham or Imperial, having set his heart on Warwick. A risky strategy but it paid off.
We're now going through it with DS3. He's decided that as he's been to Oxford with the school he doesn't need to make another visit. He's going to a Chemistry Open Day at Warwick on a Saturday, when I would struggle to take him so he's taking the train. He's seen Bristol, and he's decided to visit Southampton and / or Sussex if they offer him a place (which, being translated, means he's not been sufficiently organised to book onto an open day.)
Isn't the accommodation cheaper though?DrScotsman wrote: »Although to be fair, most students seem to decide to live far away in Leamington. Baffles me

DS1 lived very close in his 2nd year, then further out for his 3rd and 4th years. So they all bought bikes ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I went to some open days with my daughter, some she went alone. One problem now is that if they need an overnight stay most hotels won't take a booking for an under 18 on their own. Well that was our experience and so for those trips we went together. My son casually mentioned last Monday that he had been to the Exeter open day on the Saturday. I knew he had been out with a friend for the day but he hadn't mentioned the open day. Hadn't even asked for the train fare! I have found most of their friends have been the same, parents at some open days but not all.Sell £1500

My DS1 considers one field is countryside. He took his first degree at Imperial and has chosen to stay on in London, comuting 30 mins by bike along busy roads. My idea of hell TBH. I thought Warwick was lovely when we went 4 years ago as one of his choices but one visit was enough for him.Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me0
