Cancelling a Tesco Clobcard-Credit Card

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere; I did a couple of searches and could not find it.

Anyway... I'm going though a major overhaul of my finances, and I want to get new cards as well as cancelling old unused ones. In particular, I have a Tesco credit card which I haven't used for ages (1, maybe even 2 years) and would like to have it cancelled because I see no point in having it just to bulk up my wallet.

I called Tesco finance a few days ago, gave them the card details, told them I wanted to cancel etc etc. They told me they haven't got any record of my card at all on their database. They just can't 'see' it; the card number means nothing to them. They suggested perhaps because I haven't used it in a long time, the card got automatically cancelled by the system, even though I had not asked for it to be cancelled yet. I thought this unusual but fair enough, as long as the card it's cancelled who cares.

Yesterday though, I received yet another statement from Tesco credit card, dated Sept 19. It is a perfectly normal credit card statement (balance is zero) with no hint that the card has been cancelled or that is even about to be cancelled. Just a normal statement.

I then called Tesco finance back, asked them how come my card number is not on your records if you still send me statements??? I also gave them my OH's card number (2nd card on same account) just in case - butapparently our cards are not in the system. Yet how on earth are we getting bills??? Surprise surprise, they could not answer that one!

They suggested that WE (WE!!!!) should write to Tesco finance to ask them to clarify if we are still on the system. I find this suspicious, seems to me like a way of procrastinating on their part as they don't know what is happening. I'm also wary of posting a letter containing my data and credit card detail as it could get lost in transit or when it reaches destination.

Could I get some advice and/or opinions from people in the know?

Is the account marked "settled" on credit files?
Are your details registered on the Tesco website? If so, is your account still accessible?

    Moggles,

yes, the account is marked as 'settled'.
    Specifically, Experian offers this info:

    Current balance: settled
    Settled on 7/3/2007
File updated for the period 16/8/09

I assumed that 'settled' means that there is no debt on the card (the debt is settled, that is), not that the card has been cancelled. Otherwise, why would I receive a statement dated 19 Sept 2009 for a card 'settled' in 2007?

I am afraid we were never registered on the Tesco website so I could not access it that way. I have tried registering just now just to see what happened and it tells me "Unable to validate information provided, please try again".

No, a settled account is one which you have made all the necessary payments to and which has been closed. The payment history shown refers to the period before you settled
    in 2007 ;)

Sorry, only Tesco knows the answer to that one

...problem is, judging from the last two phonecalls I had with them, they seem to be err... how shall I put it? ..."firmly on the incompetent side of things".... :D

I'll call them again tomorrow from work if I can or over the weekend and present them with this new data about the Experian report showing the account as closed ('settled') and see if they show any sign of intelligent life...

    ...fingers crossed...

    I'll keep you posted ;)
