Advice on knowing council houses in neighbourhood.

Hi

I am a first time buyer and I have liked a 3 bed property.

Is there a website to know the neighbourhood housing profile w.r.t to private housing and any council houses in that area or street.

I called up the council and they gave info...that the area has mix of council and private houses.
The area seems to be good to me.

The local estate agents have'nt provided much info.

I can't keep calling coucil for every house I like ..so is there a easy way to find out about the neighbourhood profile ....council housing on a partcicular street.

I have visited sites like ACORN/UPMYSTREET but they are very generalise.

I hope someone can enlighten me as I like the property and want to take a wise descision.

Regards
abee

  • Just because there are council properties on a particular estate does not make it a bad area!!

A website may be able to give you numbers council vs owned but thats nothing without first hand experience

Best advice I was ever given before I got my house was to visit the area at different times of the day
After school ,early evening and pub kickout are the best times to give you an idication of what the area is really like

Yes you might look like an idiot sitting in your car for a hour, i know I did but it really did give me a feel for what the place was really like

Agree with Morgan_Ree. There can be wonderful council tenant neighbours and awful private owner neighbours. Rather than going by council/private ratios, it;s best to spend lots of time visiting the area at different times and see if you spot any signs of trouble, look to see if properties are well maintained, check the Ofsted reports of local schools to see if they are decent or sink schools, etc.

I thought snobbery was a thing of the past. You never know, you might not be good enough for the local council tenants anyway. Perhaps you should look at buying an Island instead if the thought of living in the same vacinity as council properties distresses you so much.

Is that really a helpful post?

The OP has no way suggested that they think council houses are a bad thing

They merely want to make an informed decision, but they do like the house, and the area so they're just covering all the bases, is this not wise?

The easiest way to tell is to walk past during normal working hours, and if you see a fat woman, wearing a too tight tracksuit, smoking a Rothmans with at least 4 kids all of different colours, then you will know it's council property.

Satellite dishes are also a good indicator.
