Thanks Nile, but do you think i'd be better off with a Hybrid rather then a Mountain bike? I was told that Mountain bikes are heavy on the roads

Oh well, i'll just have to hunt round for a better bike :o

Might be worth getting someone who is mechanically minded to take a look at it and see what they think. Your boyfriend / dad / brother etc?

If not then look in yellow pages for an independant local bike repair shop!

Although with a decent mountain bike it won't make too much difference compared with a hybrid, cheaper mountain bikes tend to weigh an absolute ton so obviously a lot of your effort goes into hauling that along. As a good measure, you should really be able to comfortably lift the bike with one hand (wander around Halfords picking a few up and, if you don't get funny looks from the assistants, you'll see what I mean).

If, like me, you're, how shall I say it, "comfortably built", you might find it better to avoid bikes with full/rear suspension. I find half of my effort goes into bouncing the suspension up & down rather than propelling forwards. Best combination I found was front suspension & a sprung saddle.

    Persevere, it will get easier!
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

Well i've just put a deposit on a Hybrid bike, nice it is as well. I did feel the weight, much lighter then my mountain bike and thinner wheels, it's also got 24 gears, the bloke in the shop showed me the best gear for uphills, it looks easier to switch gears then the mountain bike as well. I sat on it, very comfy, so hopefully now i have a faster road bike i should be abe to peddle uphill better then i have been. I get it next Saturday as i get my wages next week. I'll let you know on the Monday how i got on with my journey :D
