Clueless about tax credits. Where to begin?

I was speaking with a colleague who mentioned that if you earn under £13k, you could qualify for tax credits.

Now, I know that there are loads of different tax credits, and I really dont know where to begin when it comes to looking into them.

A quick summary of my finances:

I earn £7k a year and my husband earns £14k.

We have council tax to pay, mortgage and property maintenance, because it's an apartment, plus the usual food, transports and energy bills.

We're scraping by, but if there's a £13k expectation for one person, surely £21k for two would entitle us for something (this is before tax)?

I cannot work full time for medical reasons and he's already working every hour in the day.

Where do I begin?

Thanks

  • If you go into the reclaim £1000s bit up the top and then government bit and benefit calculator it will give u an idea of how much you will be entitled to and then you can get an app form to apply.

I definitely think you should be entitled to something, me and my partner were earning £40k between us before and I was still getting £20 pw!

    This may help you.
On a joint income of £21K you will not normally qualify, unless you have children (then it would be Child Tax Credit, and possibly Working Tax Credit), or one of you fulfills the criteria for disability element of WTC (see here for info on this, especially point 3!).
    Hope this helps.

Was this working tax credit or child tax credit though ?
I'd have thought £40K income was far too high for WTC unless disability involved (and even still!)
OP does not mention children and as I have mentioned their joint income would be too high for working tax credit (unless a disability element involved!).
