Virgin - Beware additional Override costs

Hi,

Just moved to Virgin from BT. Have used Overrides with BT for Canada and Ireland - typically 0.5p/Minute.

Just checked Virgin costs for same - Virgin charge connection fee plus additional PPM, for example :-

Canada using 0844 200/205 nos. (Virgin price band PG22), 9P connection charge plus 3ppm on top of overide providers 0.5ppm.

Same call using 0844 605 nos. (Virgin Price band PG8) , 9p connection charge plus 7ppm, on top of override providers 1ppm.

Both still cheaper than Virgin (20ppm), but double what you may be expecting!

info from:
http: // allyours.virginmedia.com/html/phone/callingcosts.html (take out the spaces either side of "//" - I'm not allowed to post links as a new user:confused:)

Cheers,

Derek

All providers except BT can charge whatever they like for 0844 calls. As you've discovered, VM has decided it's a good way of increasing profits to charge 3p/minute for 0844 numbers for which BT and others charge the standard 0.5p/minute rate (BTW, you pay VM 3p/minute, they give the provider their standard cut and pocket the rest. You don't pay 3p/minute and 0.5p/minute).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • With Virgin, you can use 18185's 0808 free phone number which would mean you would only pay

4p connection charge (international calls) and 0.5p per min to Canada
Martin Lewis is always giving us advice on how to force companies to do things.

How about giving us advice on how to remove ourselves from any part of
    MoneySupermarket.com

I hereby withdraw any permission Martin might have implied he gave MoneySupermarket.com to use any of my data. Further more, I do not wish ANY data about me, or any of my posts etc to be held on any computer system held by MoneySupermarket.com or any business it has any commercial interests in.
