CC cheque- whats the score??

hi,
can you believe it... the garage thats doing some work on my car has just told me it does NOT take credit cards!!!
this is some major work thats going to cost about £1500 i was going to pay via my CC so as to have a bit of come back on the garage if anything was to go wrong further down the line.
paying the bill isnt really a problem, i would just have prefered to have had the rights asscoiated with a CC payment
now to the question......................
if i was to pay by credit card cheque would i still have the same rights?
cheers phil

don't think you would, and credit card cheques are a very expensive way of paying for it as don't they charge you interest straight away rather than giving you however many days interest free. I've seen Martin advise people to throw Credit card cheques away as they are expensive.

It's a right annoyance about the garage not taking the payment, but think a CC cheque mind end up doubling your annoyance.

A credit card cheque counts as a cash advance not a purchase and so you will pay interest from day 1 and normally at a higher rate (and certainly not under any 0% offer)

I believe that you should still get the consumer credit act protection as it is still coming off of the credit card but as to extras offered by your own CC company you would need to check with the issuer.

Occasionally you get credit card cheques from Mint at 5.9% APR for 6 months with no transfer fees. That can either be paid directly to the garage or paid into your account and you can get the money as cash - just like a Super Balance Transfer like Egg.

That's the only one I know that does that apart from Halifax which charge a 2% transfer fee. However, Mint only send them out about once every six months.

The best thing to do is to check the T&C's of the credit card cheques you have been sent. Sometimes they attract a fee, sometimes not. Sometimes thay are classed as a cash advance, sometimes as a purchase. Most of the time they seem to be charged at a higher APR than a standard card transaction. Check to see what yours say before using them.

thanks, i do know about the extra charges and as i said the money is not a problem...........pay for the work done, come home, pay amount off card immediatly and then CC company is liable for the work done as well as the garage :j

According to the OFT*, credit card cheques do not 'usually' provide the same level of protection.

However, and in my experience, all the cheques I have seen (Mint, MBNA (Virgin), LTSB, et al) specifically state that you do not get section 75 protection.
    * Under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 if a lender provides credit to finance a purchase from a separate supplier pursuant to pre-existing or contemplated future arrangements with that supplier, the lender is generally liable equally with the supplier for any breach of contract or misrepresentation. Section 75 may not apply to credit card cheques. This will depend in part upon whether any arrangements between the card issuer and the retailer contemplate the use of credit card cheques. The extent of section 75 liability in this area may be clarified by the forthcoming judgment of the Court of Appeal.
