To strip or not to strip?

Wallpaper obviously
in our new living room, there is a rather unattractive textured wallpaper in a coral red kind of sponged effect finish. uurgh.
can it be painted over or do I need to strip it off first.
I first assumed I would have to strip the paper in order to emulsion the walls a different colour. a friend suggested we may be able to paint straight over it.
now this doesnt look like the type of textured paper you buy to paint over, it looks like the colour is in the paper itself it you get what I mean. so if I emulsion over it, will it peel/bubble or could anything else horrid happen? should I use a tester pot on a small area to see what happens?
the house is only 15 years old so I assume the walls underneath will be fairly sound. however, I would obviously like to save time and hassle by not stripping them if poss. the room is 19 x 16 ft but the paper just goes up to the dado.

It might bubble, it's a chance you'll have to take. I imagine to aviod bubbling you could paint it very lightly in successive coats.0

Just paint it.If it does bubble,it will return to normal when dry.0
