What can I do?

Last year we moved from a 3 bed semi to a 4 bed detached, we stayed with the same company Atlantic elec and gas and our monthly direct debit remained the same.
We haven't had a bill so far this year until today.
Today I have been advised that I owe £398.26 for gas and £233.95 for electric. My direct debits are going up from £37 to £122 per month for gas and from £47 to 98 per month for electric.
Obviously this is a bit of a shock and I want to know whether I have to just grin and bear it or have Atlantic acted irresponsibly in letting it get so out of hand?
I could think about switching but that would mean having to repay the money they say I owe in one go .
