Good Housekeeping cook book

Dear OS-ers

I'd really like to get a good housekeeping cook book, but am confused. There are loads of different titles out there, I want a general cook book that also includes info like menu planning, kitchen layout, getting the best from your utensils etc.

I also notice that the range has had a number of reprints.

What's the best title and edition for me to look out for?

thanks!

I bought the Goohousekeeping cookery book by Ebury Press from a car boot sale 2 years ago for £1 and it is my bible - it's got everything in it, not sure of the year but it's pretty old 70's I think.

I wouldn't bother getting a new they are all basically the same (although I did have a veggie on which was different) look for them in charity shops or boot sales.

I have the silver general cooking one and it is great. I'm not sure it has loads about kitchen layout, utensils (but I think it has a bit), but the recipes are good, work and it has loads in.
I bought my sister the newer version (pink cover) when she was my bridesmaid last year.

I have product-32706.jpg this one it's good but I like my mum's older one that will be from late 70's early 80's.

This one is very modern and has lots of new stuff in it though. The Turkey curry is delicious!
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice

That's the one I got my sister. My one has an almost identical silver cover. To be honest I like modern cook books because I like quite modern cooking, but good housekeeping still have basic traditional stuff in as well, so it's really ideal.

Why buy when you can get any recipe in this world on the internet?

If you want the feel of the book though, there are always loads of cookery books in the charity shops, and each is as good as the other I think!

My copy is Good Housekeeping Cookery Book - completely revised edition 1976 - it is brown with a picture of a crown roast, a pie and some pate on the cover.
the end of the index includes: menus, kitchen planning, food storage, cooking for laarge numbers, entertaining etc etc it has 607 pages.
I find that and Delia covers just about all the basics!!

Try asking around your family! My copy came from a great aunt via my mum, and it's ancient, a black cover and tells you how to preserve eggs in eisinglass! Never needed to do that, but it is great for all the basic foods, and what you can use as substitutes if you don't have something. I know loads of people with the same edition and there's have all been passed on by family too!

I have the same one and I agree!
Its an excellent reference book. I also have a 1998 edition and its totally different. Not nearly as good. It has some nice recipes but its not the same useful reference book.

My mum had a black one published in 1959.I used to love looking at the cake pics in it.I was over the moon to find the same book in Oxfam but in much better condition. It is very good for all your basic baking and milk puds, pancakes, roasting times etc.No good, however for pesto, thai fish curry or passion fruit sorbet.
