Any parents of preschoolers out there learning Jolly Phonics?

I'm currently going through letter sounds etc with my youngest daughter just trying to teach her her phonics.

I recall with my older two that they used to sing Jolly Phonics songs at nursery to learn each letter sound (e.g. "A, A Ants on my arm" etc).

Does anyone else know/remember any of these songs or even better where I could find a list for them? I've done a web search and have loads of links to books to buy etc, but I just wanted a song list really.

I can remember the songs for a, e and s - but that's about it!

  • Hi

My daughter started with the 'ants on the arm' song but now the teaching of phonics have changed in my daughters school. Maybe it may be worth contacting the school that your child may be going to and ask which system they use?

Good luck and well done for being so pro-active in your child's education.

    DD2 - June 05 10lbs 6oz

  • Jolly phonics were probably not around when we were younger, the trick is to not add a 'er' to the end of sounds.

The best and easiest way to learn the sounds is to get a CD (or ask the teacher for a copy which they may have) of the songs that you can get from ELC.

  • I would be wary of focussing too much on one scheme, my eldest attended a nursery where they taught one scheme and we moved to a new area and they taught another and it actually set him back a bit for a while.

My youngest is nearly 4 and we just read lots of different stories and play lots of letter and phonic games. his favourite thing is to spell with magnetic letters on a board. Initially he just copied words from his books, but in this last week he has been spelling CVC words independently.
  • Hi, I bought the Jolly phonics dvd & cd (by elc) from ebay for my two boys and they find it fun/interesting.

Also have a look at www.starfall.com Its an american site that helps teach phonics and has songs, games, stories etc.
