  • There use to be a website, but its down at the moment due to data rights issues with the trainline.com. It would be easier for you to give us your journey details as there's many people on this site that will try their best to help you get the cheapest fare.

    Just need to know dates and perferred times?

    Birmingham to Newcastle is not Virgin (though they will sell you the tickets for it no problem)

    Cross Country run the service, the through trains anyway. I find their website easier to use than Virgin.

    The prices you get should be the same whoever you use - but avoid the likes of thetrainline, raileasy and qjump who charge a booking fee

    First tip is to look for two singles rather than a return.
  • ta for the help guys that virin site is very expensive

    i'll look at cross country and if i need any more help i'll come back

    ah the good old days of british rail
  • You basically have to sit at the computer manually punching things in. There isn't really a website that is going to do it for you.

    The things in particular to look out for is when you are travelling around rush hour times. Quite often if part if your journey occurs during a rush hour time or busy area, then the whole of your journey will be charged at a rush hour rate.

    The trick is to minimise the time you are paying the 'rush hour' fare and get a separate ticket for the quieter times.

    The only thing for is try every station in between to see what you get.

  • If you do need to split tickets then try;

    York or Carlisle

    Another tip, if you do split at York and you get a NXEC Advance Single from York to Newcastle buy the ticket from the NXEC website as you'll get an extra 10% discount for that ticket.

    Sounds quite cheap.

    Perhaps they just need to rethink their business model, for example you put in your travel details, and they search for the cheapest split ticket, and tell you how much it is, but they will only reveal the split details if you pay them 10% of the saving against the non-split price. Everyone's a winner.

    Try Sheffield?

    I live in Leicester and when I go home to Newcastle I split at Sheffield and have got some really dirt-cheap tickets on that route.
