Help diagnosing dyslexia

Options
Hi, Can anyone help me find out who or where I can apply for help getting dyslexia diagnosed for an adult heading to uni in Jan 2010.

We live in Scotland I I just wondered if anyone knew of a fund or if local authorities can help have a suspected dyslexia be confirmed and help then put into place to support student while studying.

Kind regards x;)

Have a look at this - there's some useful links towards the end re higher education.

I know when my aunt went to college in her fifties she got support from the college - she didn't (and still doesn't) have a formal diagnosis, but got the help anyway. Can the person contact the uni they're attending to find out what support they can offer?

  • Hi
I asked my uni for to test me after I started my first year.( I am know starting my third year). It took from the September to the Jan for all the tests to be done. I am dyslexic and I have a lot of support from the uni. However as you don’t start until January you could ring your uni you are going to and ask if they will test you before you start. They may not be able too but they will help you with what route you need to take.

Hi, thanks everyone for your replies.

I have never been tested, when I was at school it was unheard of and we were just put down to low achievers!!

both my daughters have now been diagnosed, the eldest on her 2nd day at college, despite going all through school with obvious difficulties, then my younger daughter in p3, but only when I suggested it, as apparently, schools cannot be seen to be labelling now and the parent has to ask if there is a possibility.

I will contact the Uni if I get accepted and take things from there, I will also follow the links provided.

    Thanks again x

I have just finished uni, and was diagnosed in my second year. School never bothered to offer any help what-so-ever, even when I desperately struggled with maths. So yeah, just go to the disability and dyslexia department and ask for a test at the uni. :) If you're diagnosed you can apply for a disabled students grant, and get loads of equipment to help you - like a laptop!

You'd have thought so wouldn't you, but no-one wondered at my school why I'd gone from very good GCSE results to crap A levels (apparently that is common with dyslexia/dyspraxia). Also the dyslexia/dyspraxia assessment people at uni said my GCSE results were typical for someone with dyspraxia (much worse at german than my other subjects). I do wish it had been noticed earlier!

Anyway rant over. OP as previous replies have said they will test for it at uni, and if you do have dyslexia or similar you'll get equipment etc.

Although im not at uni im doing a diploma (level 3) in holisitc therapy at my FE college, i am waiting for my dyslexia assesment, but regardless of that i now have a weekly meeting with an additinal learning tutor to support me in my theory work, she is brill..

She has ordered my main text book and got a list of work from my tutor and will support me for the whole year. once my assesment is done i can if i wish have her in my theory class to support me (main worry is leanring the anatomy stuff) Like many dyslexics i struggle to pronounce difficult words as i sound things out phonetically...

Im 39 and onlyfound out 2 years ago after struggling since starting school...im so relieved to have some support as im determind to finish this course and not drop out when the accademic side overwhelms me.

contact the uni your going to, there are assesments that can be done and some local dyslexia groups do test but fuding is hard to get and a full assesment is arounf £300.

mine is free as im on bebefits and the coleege is doing it

    good luck and enjoy uni...
