Hospital Accommodation: Benefit in Kind

I wonder if anyone can help me out with a worrying 'Benefit in Kind' problem I now face...
I live in Newcastle in the house that I own. I pay my mortgage, utility bills, TV licence and council tax as per normal.
For the past 6 years I have worked on various small contracts all over the UK, journeying back home to Newcastle at the weekends. During all this time I have 'lived' in hotels, hostels, B&Bs etc. I submitted expense claims for these accommodation invoices which were always paid by the contract's 'client' (the organisation I was effectively providing a service to).
My last contract (an NHS hospital in London) turned into a full-time substantive post. I agreed to this on the basis the hospital pay for my (very basic communal) on-site doctors/nurses type accommodation. The rent is approximately £400 per month.
9 months down the line I am being warned of two things:
(1) the trust is in financial difficulty and may cease payment (unfortunately there is nothing written on my contract paperwork about the agrred accommodation).
(2) the trust accommodation manager informs me he is obliged to inform payroll that I am receiving free accommodation. He warns me that I may have pay a considerable amount of tax due to the accommodation being a "Benefit in Kind"!?!
Can anyone offer advice, in particular relating to point number 2 (as I can argue point number one or re-negotiate if required). I would have thought accommodation away from home is not the same as a 'Benefit in Kind' perk?
I know a lot of people will probably simply tell me to be grateful I have a job but this is worrying nevertheless.
