FWIW, I think something needed to be done and that MSE took the least fatal option. some of the attaks were heinous.
and yes, they fly both ways, and very few of us are totally innocent, so no point anyone takin the high ground over it.0 -
Why don't you just ignore it like me then? Easy, it's only a few who engage anyway.I don't say everything gets shouted down by everyone with a bearish tendency, but any attempt to post a detailed argument usually gets drowned in pages of silly personal and ad hominem attacks, at which our cheeky chappy Mewbie is a past master. And after a certain point you do ask yourself why you bother.
What kills this board, is the fact that as soon as it was born, it had outlived it's usefulness. When alot of us were on the main house buying board, it was alot of arguing with normal posters.
"house prices are going to continue going up for ever"
"Don't be daft, of course they are going to fall!"
Etc.... x 1000 topics.
As soon as we came here, the only people to argue amongst, were ourselves and that soon became a very very few, as lets face it, you can only have so many different posts about house prices. So then we started talking about the economy/banking in more and more detail, more people dropped away, why? Because it was boring and way beyond alot of posters.
Most of the people on this board now seem completely locked in one way or another, the ones like me that swing around and look at it from both sides are relatively few on the ground. So there is often very little point debating with anybody.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

That's what kills debate here, not the fact the board is hidden. People engaging in threads but without the least intention of discussing anything, just wanting to rubbish other posters. Precisely what Mewbie explained he does earlier in this thread.

i like you're posts and very frequently agree with your point of view as i understaqnd where you are coming from :beer:0 -

wow, I completely disagree with this bit, I think its the most fasinating and educational topic on MSE! Those with knowledge, particularly Generali, are so generous with their time and patience explaining it to those its beyond, you only have to read the kind and non-derogatory replies to my question posed late last night, where a few are patiently tryin to answer my question of whether wealth is a pie.:o
In fact its these posts I miss the most, and the ones that eplein more practical aspects of economy, they are truely empowering.0 -
Mostly I agree, but if others did as well, then this board would have alot more than the usual less than 20 readers it has most of the time.lostinrates wrote: »wow, I completely disagree with this bit, I think its the most fasinating and educational topic on MSE! Debate isn't a spectator sport though. The reason you do it is to learn things, it's about having to sustain an argument against opposition. It's unusual during a debate for anyone arguing to do 180 degree u turns, or even admit immediately to errors of fact or emphasis, but generally good opposing arguments will influence the line you take.
Where here, advance a detailed argument and someone will quibble about the words you use or call you a cat lady. Or explain that they don't read what you write but it's obviously wrong. That is what kills debate, not removing a board from view when not logged in.0 -

I think one has to accept on an open board, people will be diverse and some will be cat lady shouters, some will be snidey, some will be true debaters.
I have frequently changed my mind s a result, not necessarily of debate here, but what that debate has lead to me reading or learning.
In fact, I think debate was chosen in order to give us some pride. while I hold this is of a ifferent nature that the arms forums, it is as much discuss as debate.0 -
Problem is though Julie, I find you basically boring. Nothing to engage with other than a great deal of what to me is interminable drivel. A lot of people think posting great swathes of intelligent sounding stuff is actually intelligent. imo it's just dull, dull, dull.Debate isn't a spectator sport though.
