When my Capital One card was cloned, among other things they renewed their car insurance...

That's a bit more MSE than the £150 worth of calls to sex chat lines someone notched up on my CC.

And .... a lot easier to explain to your OH?:o

  • Might I suggest a couple of additional things if the card issuer has not advised this already:

    1) File a protective registration with CIFAS
    2) File a crime reference with your police station
    3) Get a shredder and be vigilant with your waste if you're not already

The protective registration will assist you in the future if anyone does to try and use your personal details in a credit application, and would warn say another card issuer or bank to be extra careful.

    Kind regards

Though be aware that a protective registration will slow down any future credit application. Not necessarily a bad thing but as with everything there are pros and cons and people rarely get told both sides.

It's easy to get information about people. For example I used to work for local government. I ended up have tons of information about people: bank details, date of birth, credit card details, driving licence info etc. This was before chip and pin, but I'm sure if I was scrupulous enough (and a crook) I could obtain that info. The only thing that I wouldn't be able to have is personal passwords.
You just have to be very cafeful and check everything regularly.
