Sound card not working?

I've got a Dell dimension 8400. It has suddenly started to behave very weirdly when I use Itunes or stream radio over the internet. It gives out a very loud pulsating screeching noise. However, it doesn't do it all the time - maybe 50% of the time. I've tested the speakers with my laptop, and they seem fine.
I recently upgraded the RAM from 1GB to 3GB. Could this be the problem? I've downlaoded a new driver for the soundcard, but this didn't help. Anyone have an idea what's going on?
