  • Was just sorting some stuff for MIL and came across this, which I have been carrying around with me (electronically) since about 2002 - it is really relevant to me and I think some of you might like it too...

The Mayonnaise Jar and the Coffee…..

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle and when 24hours in the day are not enough, remember the Mayonnaise Jar and the Coffee…

A professor stood in front of his philosophy class one morning, and held in front of his students a large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.. He then asked the class if the jar was full and the students agreed it was.

He then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar gently. The pebbles rolled into the open spaces between the golf balls. He asked the students again if the jar was full and again they agreed it was..

The professor then took from behind his desk a bag of sand and poured this into the jar, again shaking the jar gently, and of course the sand filled up everything else. He asked the students if the jar was now full and a unanimous “yes” was proclaimed.

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar filling the empty space between the sand.
    The students laughed!

“Now” said the professor as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognise that this jar represents your life!

The golf balls are the important things –your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favourite passions-things that if everything else were lost and only they remained your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter, like your job, your house and car. The sand is everything else—the small things.”
“If you put the sand in the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles and the golf balls. The same goes for life…
If you spend all your time and energy on the small things, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to those things that are critical to your happiness.
Play with your kids. Take time to go and see the doctor. Take your partner out to dinner.
There will always be time to clean the car, mow the lawn, watch the TV! Set your priorities.
Take care of the golf balls first; things that really matter. Set your priorities-the rest is just sand”

One of the students raised her hand and enquired what the coffee represented.
The professor smiled. “I am glad you asked. It just goes to show that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for coffee with a friend!”

You are one of my golf balls ;)
