Problems booting up laptop

My son has recently been given a second hand IBM notebook. He loaded a PC game on it (I think this is where the problem began and could be a memory issue) but he has had problems starting up the laptop ever since.
It goes to start Windows XP but ends up in a cycle of rebooting, so much so, that appears impossible to remove the latest software. Using the IBM diagnostic software has not shown any errors but clearly one exists!

Can anyone HELP - please?!
Please also excuse my ignorance on the techie stuff. I am new to this.
