When can you go mainstream after adverse?

I still have to send some letters off, but at the moment I have a late payment marker - a 5 - incorrectly registered against me (my account was in dispute at the time).

I have plenty of credit accounts - an overdraft with my bank which I've been with for 12 years, 3 sub-prime credit cards (2 of which have doubled my credit limit in 4mths), Next account (4mths open), mobile phone account for over 5 years, also recently got a new bank account but that's not reporting to the credit agencies, maybe as I don't have an o/d with them, but was told they would do. All of these have lovely green 0's.

Just wondering how long it will take approx. until I can apply for a more mainstream lender, like Virgin?
Also one who doesn't search Equifax as this file is worse than Experian.

  • When did you last try applying for a mainstream card? Who was it? What was the outcome?
  • Not applied for a mainstream card in a long while. Was either Virgin (which I got rid of, wish I hadn't now) or Marbles (still got unfortunately). This was 4 or 5 years ago!

    I have 3 sub-prime cards which I've had open between 4-5 mths.
  • Have you not had a response from your last letter? If you have no searches against you then give it a go, the late payment will be shown but so long as its not a default you'll be fine.

I thought you'd sent that letter and told em to remove it - that was ages ago we were sorting that! I assumed it'd be sorted.

Give it a go if you feel brave - only way to find out! If you get declined then you know to forget the super cards cos they are really looking for excellent risk and as you know a late payment marker like that may not look too good....

For instance I have 3 mainstream cards, but still cannot get Virgin/MBNA......

Hi NID, no I haven't had time to send off the letters yet  For various reasons including being tired all the time from commuting and weekends choc-a-block full and me only being able to post letters special delivery Sat morn
I will get my !!! into gear and do it, just had no time

I have got some searches yes, from my credit cards and Next and I also applied (and was accepted) for a new current account last month.

Not sure if it's worth doing? :o
  • I'm probably only interested in Virgin to be honest. If I can't get them then I won't bother with any other cards. They gave my OH such a brilliant life-of-balance offer recently. Really helped him out, although he has excellent credit history.

I closed my old card with them November last year. I suppose I'm better off sending those letters off, then waiting until a year has passed since my account closure with Virgin, then reapplying

Golly how I wish I hadn't been so foolish a few years ago, and used online banking properly  Was always worried to use it which is one of the reasons I got myself into a silly mess. I wish I'd found MSE then as well! Noway would I have got into the mess if I'd have come on here a few years ago.

    Whoops - tangent :o:D
  • *bump* :p:p:p:D:D:D:D
  • I would wait twelve months after having your adverse cards open.
Got Halifax Classic to reduce my interest rate by 5% woohoo - 10/06/08 Thanks MSE!
    Another 3% shaved off 10/12/08
    ANOTHER 4 % June 09:beer:
