You could do a lot worse than 'phone your local tax office as they are usually surprisingly helpful. They also run a number of free courses to help you keep your books properly, advise on what you might reasonably claim for, etc.

Accountants also often a free initial consultation which might give you an idea of what you might be taking on.

One other thought - are you having clients call to your home for treatment? You might want to think about whether you need planning permission as neighbours might complain if there is a constant stream of vehicles arriving and departing.

The best place to start is the Business Link website.

After you have had a look around that give them a call and book yourselves on their courses - they are free and in most areas. I would suggest doing them before starting up, although I understand time might be tight to catch the Christmas rush.

As chalkie99 suggests make sure you have all legalities sorted before you start, especially concerning liability insurance.
  • Make sure you register the business with the Revenue because if you don't tell them within three months you could face a penalty. Register by calling the Newly Self-employed helpline on 0845 9154 515 open from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Friday and from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm at weekends.

You have to register with IR not within 3 months. See this link: -

Also worth noting that your home insurance wont cover this and you really need to be up front with them as they will do anything to get out of paying if the worst ever happened.
  • Thank you for all your help and advice we are getting liability insurance of course as people can claim for anything now days! :D Will let you all know how it goes ;)
  • You also need to check with the council, if your business will involve people visiting your house / premises, there may be planning permission issues... Its to do with the increased traffic you will generate and the impact on your neighbours in a residential area.
