Halifax Credit Card Missed Payment

Hello everyone,

I have a Halifax credit card and my balance is currently only £6. The payment was due on the 21 september, so I got online the last day(I forgot before) and tried to transfer from my current account to my credit card. I do this all the time for my HSBC credit card and the payment goes through in 2 hours. With halifax, it was not possible, the system didn't let me to pay until the next day which made me ''miss a payment''. The next day I called Halifax credit cards service and I was told that now I'll be fined £12 for not paying my £6 balance on time. I have been charged this £12 twice before in the last 3 years, so all together I will have been charged £36. She said if I write a cheque for a tenner, I can claim all these fines back and probably would get refunded. So now my questions are:

1-I don't have my statement for the first 2 £12 charges, do I need to pay to Halifax seperately to get these statements back to make a claim?

2- These do type of missed repayments ( which I paid them the day after the due date and always in full) effect my credit score and if so, for how long?

Thanks a lot for reading.

You don't need the statements to make a claim. But as part of your claim you'd want to quote them the dates they applied the charges. Phone them back and ask them to confirm the dates of the previous 2 charges :)

Saves you a tenner. Personally, I wouldn't spend £10 to try and reclaim an extra £24. I'd take the £10 and spend it on an alcoholic beverage of your choice.

Negligible effect on credit scoring if everything else is all good and this is the only instance in the last year - if in doubt, check your credit report to see if it's even reported. In many cases it won't be because it's been paid before they actually report to the CRA's.

Halifax told me they report the account status as at statement date.

Because there's around 3 days between the payment due date and the next statement date I'd assume 1 day late won't be reported.

Only one way to confirm though...order your reports.

Of course your internal credit rating with Halifax will suffer to some degree, how much I'm not sure.
  • It is worth calling halifax and asking them to refund you the late fee - if you haven't had any late fee refunds in the last six months they can refund it for you as a good will gesture. Explain that the payment that was late was for £6 and that it is unfair for you to be charged £12 a payment that was one day late. If they refuse you can complain. Remember that the bank charges are on hold so there are no guarantee that you will get all 3 late fees refunded. :rotfl:

These aren't "bank charges" though, they're credit card charges and are therefore not subject to the "hold".

I bank with Halifax. I've only once succeeded in sending a payment via the FPS. Is this a record?

Lenders' procedures vary. If the worst happens, your credit files will look something like this:
    100000000000000100000000000000100000

Each slip-up (marked '1') drops off your file after 36 months in the case of Experian, 48 months with Equifax, so the effect is fairly short-lived.

It might be an idea to set up a direct debit to pay the minimum amount. That way, it's Halifax's responsibility, not yours, to make sure the monthly repayments get there on
    time ;)
