In june I had a service and MOT at a Vauxhall main dealership in at the time they rang me and told me that the rear pads needed replacing, i agreed as they told me they were ' really low'. When I arrived at the dealership they explained that the rear discs would need doing (MOT advisory) when i done the front ones which ive had done a few weeks back.

I am now having the rear dics replaced and have been told that the discs and pads should have been done together and i will have to have the rear pads done again as they have by now bedded in to the shape and contours of the old discs and it will be unsafe
Ive done about 3-4k since the pads were done.

This really annoys me, why did vaxhall tell me this before they replaced them! or not replace them at all ?

Is there anything I can do now, will it be safe with the old pads on?

I'd get another place to look over the rear discs - just to see if the dealership MOT have made a mistake or not.

An MOT advisory... that doesn't mean they are totally gone. Find out how much life they have in them by checking elsewhere.

A relative told me long ago, is their experience, on average you should be able to get two sets of pads worth of wear... for one set of discs.
  • A set of pads on average is a 10 minute job when on the ramp already, and about £20 for the raw materials, so it's worth having done. The biggest saving will be made getting it done somewhere else.

He's recently had the rear pads done... but he's a bit miffed that he's now had an MOT advisory that he needs new rear discs, and that he needs brand new pads again to go with them.

I would say even more than that.

Something to think about is that if the Discs arent too far gone then just replacing the pads might give you a bit more wear out of the brakes before the discs need done.

The main problem is if the discs are warped etc they cause uneven breaking and such. Replacing the pads might give you another few months and as said the pads is a cheap and easy job. Discs are more expensive.

Is he sure they even need done. The discs will have been visually checked. Its quite possible there is still a lot of wear in them or can be cleaned up a bit.

I certainly wouldnt take the dealers word they need done now.

My suspicion is the rear discs are fine. That this advisory is just to get you to pay out.

Impossible to be sure though... that is why I suggest getting them looked at elsewhere.

I took my car to a garage to get new rear pads fitted a few years ago.. and the guy told me he would have to fit new rear discs as well.

I didn't believe them.. had the rear pads fitted elsewhere... and it's since done a fair bit of mileage and passed 3 more MOTs on the same rear discs.

Yes they need doing, this was at my local independant garage who I trust, they said they couldnt understand why they hadn't done the discs either.

exactly, but the MOT advisory was givin on the same day as they changed the pads! They didnt even mention this until I got to the garage, they just rang and said the pads needed replacing.

I've never really undertood this. 3-4k for rear pads is nothing, they're still almost new so why replace them?

The "bedded in" issue doesn't wash surely? The old pads will "bed in" to the new discs in the same way they "bedded in" when they were fitted, won't they?

New discs & new pads will still have to do the same!

Ok they're not that expensive but why replace if not needed?
