Making Thick Curtains

I have a lot of large windows in my house, and will be looking to get curtains made for them to keep the heat in this winter, which my mum has offered to do.

Can someone tell me what sort of material to look out for, for both the curtain itself and lining? Also...cheapest place to get the material?

Ive had a look in charity shops but cant find enough material, large enough for my big windows & glass doors.

Hope someone can help! Thanks in advance

  • have you tried dunelm mill or ebay?

local markets can be a good place too
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

Ikea sometimes have some very good deals on fabric. Fabric shops vary a lot depending on where you live - in some towns you'll get really good independent fabric shops, or market stalls, in others you're limited to the branded shops. If you're anywhere near London, the Curtain Factory Warehouse in Finchley is unbeatable. Fabric Warehouse stores are spread more widely across the country and not too bad. Personally, I would choose whatever fabric I liked stylewise, and a really cheap lining fabric - just look for stuff that is sold as "curtain lining", but put a good thick interlining in between the two. For the lining and interlining, you'd probably be fine sourcing them from something like ebay.
I would imagine a bit of fleece would also work well as an interlining. If you're really trying to keep the cost down, you could consider buying a couple of the cheap fleece blankets they do in places like Dunelm and using them in between the fabric and lining. Although a bit of basic fleece off the roll from ebay might be even cheaper.

Ebay may be a good bet, I've just bought 2 sets from there. If you put your postcode in you can look at any curtains and/or curtain material within your area. Saves on the postage price, anyway, as curtains can be pricey to post, especially if you want heavy, draught-proof ones.

My mother-in-law's friend told me you can buy thermal lining although, apparently, it is tougher (I assume thicker) to sew. I'm sure someone will correct me on this if this isn't right.
It's wouldn't have not wouldn't of, shouldn't have not shouldn't of and couldn't have not couldn't of. Geddit?

To improve the insulation properties of your curtains then you need to look at putting interlining between the inner and outer fabrics. It is like a wadding and helps the curtains drape better. I think it is about £3-4/m

  • Thanks everyone, im going to have a swatch on ebay see what I can find!

U can get really cheap fleeces from ikea for about 2 quid and they are massive, so going to have a look and see if they are big enough.
