Car Insurance comparison sites

Hi

My policy is due for renewal very shortly. My question is what are peoples' experiences with car insurance comparison sites such as moneysupermarket, confused.com, gocompare etc.?

Do they pretty much return similar, if not the same, quotes from providers?

Also, I had an accident within the past 2 years (which affected my NCB) and was my fault (is this referred to as a fault claim?). Gocompare insists on the value of the claim, is this simply a case of calling my existing insurer to find out?

Thanks

The comparison sites are fairly similar, they vary in the amount of Insurers they have on their list.

We get a few posters that find confused.com can sometimes be confusing to use.

One thing to be careful of, is that they all ask for your telephone number, if you put your correct number in you normally have the top five or so Insurers start ringing you and some of the companies arfe very persistant. If you want to avoid the calls some sites allow you to opt out of the calls, or alternatively enter tele number 01234 567890 which is not in use.

The accident should be entered in as a fault claim and it would be best to check with your current Insurer what the value of the claim is, when you call them they will probably suddenly offer you a cheaper premium!

It is important that you read the cover being provided as to get to the top of the list some of the Insurers will quote without some of the covers. The other thing to watch out for is they often quote with large excesses, you need to check what the "Total Excess" is which is any "Voluntary" excess and add this to any "Compulsory" / "Policy" excess.
  • Thanks for the advice dacouch.

Unfortunately, my current insurer didn't want to budge on the renewal premium, so on the grounds of not being competitive on price, I regretably had to cancel.

Be very careful to check information is correct when you use comparison sites.

We said on one that we had access to other vehicles.
This was incorrectly translated on one quote to access to other cars.

So sometimes information can be mis-translated.
Make sure you check everything is correct.

I would re-itterate lisyloo's point - The errors occur in what is called "mapping" of the aggregator question set and the insurer or broker's. I have noticed, for example, that a couple of home insurance brokers on compare the market have the detailed sums insured's mapped wrong.
