Who do I call first? - Netbook problem

I bought a netbook from Amazon in March 2009 (six months ago) and it died last night. Froze, then won't boot further than the flash screen.
I still have all the packaging and the invoice and delivery note from Amazon.
I called the manufacturer at 6pm last night to hear a recording telling me to call back Mon-Fri 9-5.30pm (typical), so I have carried the beast in to work today so that is with me when I call them.
I have a feeling they are going to tell me to send it back to them for investigation and/or repair. The item weighs quite a lot and will cost a bit to send secure.
My question is, if they want me to send it back, should they pay the postage as it's within warranty? What if I call Amazon? As it's only 6 months old, can I still reject it and have a refund? Should I call Amazon or the manufacturer first?

Your contract is with Amazon, so it's up to them to sort it out.
In the first 6 months, it's up to them to prove it wasn't faulty, so the date is VERY important here. What DAY did you buy it on?
You're still covered under the Sale of Goods Act, but you need to contact Amazon first.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
I purchased it at the very end of February and it was delivered on March 3rd.
I think it might just be a software problem. The unit was helpfully supplied with a rescue DVD/CD but the netbook doesn't have a DVD/CD drive, so I'm not clear about how to do it. I think I'll call the manufacturer when they open and see how helpful they are."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
If it's a software problem it may not be classed as faulty, have you installed anything recently? Do you use any anti virus etc? The warranty terms if it is faulty, will determine whether the vendor collects the unit, what model is it?0

It's an Acer Aspire One and is running Linux. It's plain vanilla, I haven't changed a single thing (can't work out how to with Linux, I can't even update Firefox) and I only use it for surfing the internet. No extra programs installed."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

You might want to run a recovery first, the DVD has information on how to create a recovery USB drive in another computer.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
I'm doing that now. Not actually running though. Blue line is stuck. Bah!"If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

To answer (part) of your original question, IMO I think you have passed the 'reasonable amount of time' to reject the goods and get a refund, if it happened within 4-8 weeks then i'd agree. However, they have a responsibility to remedy the problem.
Whatever the outcome, the ultimate responsibility is with Amazon under the Sale of Goods Act. They should arrange for a repair, replacement or partial/refund, of which they have the choice to do.[DISCLAIMER: Any posts made by myself are my opinions and do not represent my employer]

If its a software fault then it may not be covered under warranty or SOGA0

Problem solved. I installed Ubuntu on it and it now works again.

Just for reference - Parcel2Go would charge a maximum of £8 to deliver it...Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0
