money shop & original contract

i got into a bit of doo-doo earlier this year and had to pop some gold into the money shop. the contract for 6 onths is up and i cant find the contract, most probably munched by the resident mouse as the bag it was in was in the cupboard where i found the mouse nest. [mouse long long]
they called me the other day to remind me, i can barely afford thanks to nursery fees to even renew it but will try my hardest. however they are telling me without the original contract i need to see a solicitor [who will no doubt cost the earth] to prove who i am despite me having photo ID with them and the letter they recently sent.
anyone got any suggestions or do i let it go?
or, can i ask them to but the gold from me as i no longer have a use for it and they give me the difference?
although thats walking into a rip off isnt it.
i have a week.
