Help - how can I receive this money

Situation, a relatives probate has just been finalised and a few thousand was to be paid to my uncle who lives in Australia. He has decided to pass the money directly on to myself as a thankyou for looking after his elderly sister. I really appreciate it !
The problem is this probate happened in Donegal, I live over the border in the north (part of the uk!) and the solicitor wants to send a cheque or bankers draft to him in Australia and then he can send it back.
He said thats silly and I will lose out on the currency exchange and why can't he get a letter written by his solicitor to instruct the donegal one to pay it directly to me.
The donegal one insists she has to pay it to my uncle despite HIS solicitors protestations!! What do I do?

Two possibilities come to mind.
The first, that the solicitors ought to have thought of, is to set up a Deed of Variation, by which your uncle will forego the bequest in favour of you, when it can be paid directly to you. I don't know much about these but I believe a) all beneficiaries must agree and b) it may cost more to set up (in sols fees) than the currency exchange would have done.
The other thing that occurs to me is that he may well be able to open a GBP bank account in Australia. He can receive the cheque into this, whereupon once it's cleared he writes out a cheque to you for the same amount.0
