Never had a problem using the Mcafee uninstaller so not sure what Competitions is on about?

If you follow the link in #2 and read it you should have no problems.

I think you will be safe enough to uninstall McAfee first restart your computer and then download either Avira or Avast antivirus.

Maybe it would be a good idea if you are finding problems with errors/programmes to download Malwarebytes first, update it and then run a scan just to check there is nothing nasty and then uninstall McAfee.
  • Never posted on this site and having problems finding out how to but in desperate need of some help. Hubby has a computer running XP and Firefox. His Norton subscription ran out so we uninstalled it and tried to load AVG free download (which runs brilliantly on both mine and my sons computers) but it will not load. It comes up with MSVC redistributables installation failed. Error message OXE0010053. He is also getting bombarded with XP2010 telling him he has problems and need to pay (whatever it is???) to fix it. Help what do we do?

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION') Clck down5.png

Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

    Hi gina

The MSVC redistributables installation failed. Error message OXE0010053 you are getting when trying to install AVG is I believe a issue is relating to microsofts visual c+ libraries installation in your Windows operating system which may be corrupt, you may have to delete it and re-install bt I would await further advice about this one.

As to being bombarded with xp2010 askng for money that is a rogue antvirus programme that has somehow downloaded onto your computer.

When you uninstalled Norton did you also use the Norton uninstall tool?

Avast is a lot better IMHO, I've been using it for donkeys on my PC/laptop and I've never had a problem, unlike my Dad who paid for Norton. And yes, you do need to use the unistall tools to remove all elements of it, even those you can't see. I'd recommend downloading the unistall tool, using it and then trying Avast or Avira which as both much better than AVG.

  • I can't remember tbh. I seem to have been searching so many places for an answer that I'm getting confused. Another silly question....how do I start a new thread on this forum?? Everything I do seems to be anything but straight foreward! Thanks
