hello everyone
i have a problem with the laptop not connecting to the router at all and therefore will not reach the internet. the pc and ps3 both connect fine. as far as i know nothing has updated itself since it last connected this afternoon, i am running vista.
i have disabled the wireless card and reinstalled, i have deleted the profile for the router in network connections but it still wont connect. it does show all of the networks in range and i can select it. it does ask for the password but then it says it has had no response from the router. i have checked the router settings and reset the password to make sure but still no luck.
it does connect via lan cable.
does anyone have any ideas? thanks
matt

Does your laptop support the level of security you have set on your router? (For example, if it's an old laptop, it might not support WPA2)0

I had a problem like this and it was down to the order in which i turned things on. I think it was router, modem, laptop. Then it magically connected. Of course this could have been complete coincidence and i actually did something else but it's worth a try!0

Hi Matty,
I'm gonna take a guess if you've setup the PS3 & router yourself that you're a bit techy-savvy here but please let me/us know if any of the below doesn't make sense...
1) This could be a firewall on your Vista machine. If you've set the level of the Windows firewall too high, or installed a different firewall app, this could be the issue - if you've got the default Vista setup, this won't be.
2) Vista introduced several newer networking methods (IPV6 etc.) which make connecting to networks much faster if all your machines are on the latest OSs and if all your routers etc. are state of the art - for the rest of us, it !!!!!!s up connectivity with older networks such as NT4 or to older routers by default.
You're probably hitting this problem and to fix it involves a group policy change. I'm not using Vista right now so I can't see the options and you might want to use a search engine to tell you the right one, but the area you need to look at in the GP editor/Local Computer Policy screen is
"Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policy > Security Options" then the "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" policy object/setting.
Hope this helps!

thanks for all the advice guys. i tried all your suggestions. the main thing i could understand is that our equipment hasnt changed for well over a year and i had used the laptop on the net only a few hours before. anyway i gave up last night thinking if the wifi card had gone wonky i would just get a wifi stick. tonight when i booted the laptop it asked for my router password and connected no problem. i dont know, maybe it is on its way out but online for the time being.
thanks for the help, i am grateful for the response.
