Hi, was just wondering if there are/is any plans to re-work parts of the site?
It would be an area I definitely would suggest looking into. Having looked at just the home page it's just over 132kb total load. This is quite excessive, I know a lot of it will be cached, but if you think of the number of users accessing the site on a daily basis, that's a huge amount of bandwidth and server load being used up. Keeping pages to around 70kb is much more desirable. Some thread pages within the forums total over 250kb!
Also 25kb, 18kb and 18kb is quite high for a small logo in the top left, a central logo, and especially the email signup "warning" area. I'm sure these could be compressed further without comprising quality.
Also with regards to usability, on the front page there are two email signup boxes. Is this not excessive? There's also navigation on the left, drop down navigation on the top, and more navigation below the drop downs, and then navigation at the bottom of the page. It only adds confusion and more kb's to the total load.
And thing such as "About MSE" and "Who is Martin" might be better off on a seperate page.
Any thoughts/suggestions?
Is there any way of giving back to the site? Helping reduce the load by re-working parts?
