Have a look at a site called lse (london south east) it has an online game for dealing shares with £10000 of virtual money, you only have to register (which is free) it will give you an idea of dealing and what can go right and wrong.
Best of luck.0 -
You can also just have a virtual portfolio for a period, select which shares you want to buy and monitor the price. I did this on several selections over some time and could have turned my initial £500 intended stake in shares into £20k on just two shares over a few years but didn't because I was too chicken. Ok so it is unlikely I would have sold at the peak so far two simplistic but still very good gains. I was going to buy BP at £3 just a short time ago, when they capped the well but dithered and now they are over £4.
Everyone has different methods I am buying when I consider shares to be artificially dragged down by bad news in their sector which artificially impacts on that particular stock. Barclays was a classic during the banking crisis when they dropped very cheap then quickly recovered. BP was another, very cheap at one point as they are cash rich and even all the costs of the massive oil spill etc was relatively small for the size of the business. That's what I go for anyway and it works. If I had a pound for every pound I'd lost, I'd be confused0
