While connected to the internet and idling away in the corner of the room my laptop every so often makes a strange clicking sort of noise. It's difficult to describe. Its a click with at the same time a high pitched 'peep'. No warning as to when this happens. Sometimes 3 clicks, sometimes ten. Been doing it for a while. Anyone know what this could be?

Could be a failing hard disk drive. What operating system do you have on it?0
-
I have XP on it. The machine is 4 or 5 years old.0

Go to Start→Run, type eventvwr.msc and click OK. Take a look in the System category for errors or warnings with the word 'disk' in the Source column.0

You could also look in device manager, under disk drives - identify what drive you have installed, then check the respective manufacturer's website.
Most provide utilities that will highlight any issues with the drive.
Backup any important data before running the test, this is important.0 -

There are aprox 50 odd warnings and errors in 2451 events. No idea what that translates into!0 -
It means the HDD is due for a health check.
Go to Start→Run, type chkdsk /r and hit OK. When you next restart the computer, Windows will check the disk for bad blocks and attempt to recover them. This should alleviate the symptoms in the short term, but it probably won't solve the problem outright.
Alternatively, you can run a shorter test using a utility such as HD Tune. This won't fix anything, but you won't have to wait as long for the results either.0 -
That happened to my oldest lappy a few years ago - the hard drive was dying.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
