EON saying I HAVE to go on to a pre payment meter

You sound like me a couple of years ago, owed a thousand and all electric, no gas but got in a mess with british gas), I was forced onto a prepayment meter, though it was hard at first paying the debt off as well as usage I would never ever go back on a credit meter now.
Actually having the meter inspired me to pay it off quicker as I increased the debt repayment in the summer as I was using less electric anyway and cleared it off by the second winter.
Once I'd worked out how much to put on it, it made me so electric conscious and once the debt was paid off I was decided to stay on it.Payment a day challenge: £236.69

thanks wornoutmumoftwo. its comforting to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
whats scaring me is the prospect of not being able to get to a pay point when the shops close or, when its xmas , new yr and running out.
im gald that you got ur debt paid off, cant wait until the day i do.

Hi, I would recommend it to anyone - I am on the social tarif as well though.
I'm all electric and have been on about £10 a week through the summer, about £15-17 a week in winter (stoarage heating).
It's really just a matter of budgeting it in and giving it priority, first thing i bought each week when i got paid was my electric for the week, watched it like a hawk and knew exactely how much a day it should cost me. Only went into emergency a couple of times.
And, I paid the debt back at a lower rate so it actually freed up money to pay other debts off.Payment a day challenge: £236.69

thank you all for your help. i appreciate it.
i called them again this evening and they confirmed that i have only used 9 kwh of electcity these last 3 months. they said most of the outstanding amount was before that.
i am asuming that my boiler may have somthing to do with it, becuase it broke about 4 1/2 mths ago. but any way im sorting that out now with the landlord.
thanks again.
I'm not an an expert, but I'm an average user of electric (2 in a house both at work all day) and we use 9kwh of electric per day, so there is no way that you could have used 9kwh of electric in a quarter! A few lightbulbs in an average house would use that in a week. Are you sure the bill is based on actual readings?0 -

No there is clearly no way that the OP has only used 9kWh in a quarter.
If I understand the OP's subsequent post#11 correctly, she is implying that the previous bill was based on an over-estimated meter reading and this bill has corrected that issue.
e.g. previous bill was, say, 1,000kWh over estimated, the latest bill is based on a correct meter reading and is only reading 9kWh more than the previous estimated reading.
Err I think!0 -
The other thing you need to do before they fit a prepayment meter is produce a detailed statement of all and I mean all, income, outgoings and any debts. Suppliers are not allowed to set the debt recovery rate to a value higher than you can afford to make.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Minimum debt recovery rate will be £3 per week0

Hi lolo
Just thought I would add, prepayment meters have an emergency credit facility.
This will give you extra credit should you run out of energy when the shops are closed.
The amount of emergency credit available is generally £5 although this may vary depending on the region you are in.
When in emergency credit the meter will not collect the daily standing charge or any debt that is on the meter. It is purely for energy.
The amount of emergency credit used will need re-paying later. This will be collected the next time you top up.
Hope this helps put your mind at rest a little. Give me a shout if you need more info. Always glad to help.
