Student finance rip off

 Just got my phone bill for this month, there are £20 worth of call charges just to the student finance dept. (trying to sort out THEIR mistake) The whole idea of these 0845 numbers are a money making racket full stop. They charge you even if engaged, they keep you on hold and then suddenly cut you off so you have to call back AGAIN  It should be LAW that they should supply an alternative number or at the very least not charge untill you are actually through to an operative. SAY NO TO 0840

0845 calls are not charged if engaged (unless you get through to their menu option and are then put through to an engaged extension).

Anyway, if you're talking about Student Loans Company Ltd, there are a good few geographic options (5p per call using 18185) on www.saynoto0870.com
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • i'd be looking to recover this from them if possible, especially if you can prove it's their mistake

We have had a few requests for student finance/student loans on SAYNOTO0870.COM and we appreciate feedback. In particular, I understand that it is now known as "Student Finance Direct" or "Student Finance England" (maybe changes again tomorrow) rather than "Student Loans Company".

Most numbers are still listed under "Student Loans Company" and could require amending.
  • I've just got my bill. My wife's application has been massively delayed and I've been charged £20 - the costs start at £0.15p for an engaged tone right up to £2-3 for a ten minute wait. It's absolutely DISGUSTING and that money could have been used for half a days childcare for my daughter.

In the first instance, I'm writing to Les Campbell (the FD) in Glasgow requesting to be fully reimbursed.

Anyone got any ideas where to try next?

    Fuming!

This is one for your MP. From what I've seen in the media, the student finance service(s) is/are in chaos.

If you need to phone them again, then use the geographical number. ;)
